American Humane Presents The Old Mutt Hutt with Feed the Hungry Grant

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, May 8, 2020American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, today announced that The Old Mutt Hutt received a grant from American Humane’s Feed the Hungry fund. Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, The Old Mutt Hutt is a sanctuary for abandoned senior dogs.

“Mid-March through mid-May, essentially the full breadth of the duration of the pandemic lockdown, is always our most expensive timeframe,” said Sharon Peters, Co-Founder of The Old Mutt Hut. “That’s frightening when donations are down, and we’re quite certain they will be down for at least the next two or three months as people try to recover from what COVID has wrought. Receiving this grant at this moment, when there are so many dogs to feed and keep healthy, means the world, and far fewer sleepless nights.”

The Old Mutt Hut is a forever home for senior dogs located about 35 minutes from Colorado Springs. The dogs, all of whom are over the age of 10, and all of whom wound up homeless, live with a full-time caregiver, receive the best medical care and have several couches and beds for lounging. They are never crated or put into kennels. In 2019, The Old Mutt Hutt welcomed several new dogs into the fold – most requiring fairly significant medical interventions to ensure that their final years could be as comfortable as possible – bringing the total number of residents at the hut to 10. The team helped link up adopters with at least 15 senior dogs and coached eight people through practices and resources that allowed them to keep old dogs that they had previously believed they would have to give up. The Feed the Hungry fund will allow The Old Mutt Hunt to continue to provide its dogs with the best possible medical attention and care during this difficult time.
